#SayNoToXenophobia

Xenophobia, a disease or just a sick mentality…

What is Xenophobia?

Xenophobia is a dislike or prejudice towards people from different regions of the Earth. The ‘phobia’ part is a bit problematic really because, xenophobia isn’t directly a ‘fear’, it’s a societal or political problem that stems from a psychological issue.  However, people south of the equator or rather the African continent have redefined the term Xenophobia, it has turned into hatred and the dislike of people from other African countries and no longer a fear of foreign nationals.

The Impact of Social Media on xenophobia.

Advantages

Social Media can be of great use when it comes to xenophobia, one way that it can be of benefit is that it creates awareness and is also a form of news to other people who are connected to you via social media. Meaning that people are immediately informed about the issue.
Social Media can be used as a research platform, by taking surveys and asking for opinions.
#SayNoToXenophobia has been successful because it was trending and reached many people, thus creating awareness by showing the effect xenophobia has on people.
Big brands feel challenged to join such movements because they trend and draw traffic to their organisations.

Disadvantages

Despite the success of the hashtag, it has its disadvantages such as people using these platforms to promote xenophobia or exploit others.
The content that is being posted on these sites can be quite brutal and disturbing which may cause some people to rather not engage.
Another disadvantage is that information can be exaggerated, making it hard to know the “real” story.

I believe that everyone should be treated fairly regardless of their nationality, at the end of the day we also have people from our country who travel and move to other countries and I’d like to think that we’d want them to be treated well, so let all stand together and #SayNoToXenophobia because it affects everyone be directly or indirectly.
