#KasiLife
BACK TO THE KASI LIFESTYLE, WHERE DREAMS BECOME A REALITY.
In South Africa
Townships don’t exist, townships are known as a “kasi”, this is taken from tsotsi taal. For those of you who don’t know
what tsotsi taal is, it is basically a street language used in townships and
can be very interesting.
The aim of this
blog post is to find out how a public relations practitioner or anyone for that
matter can use social media strategically to address certain issues or raise
awareness.
HOW CAN SOCIAL MEDIA BE USED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE KASI?
Before getting
into detail, do you want to more about the kasi life? Then be sure read up
about it on https://www.tyi.co.za/news/local/kasi-life-come-and-walk-a-day-in-my-tekkies/ this piece gives us more insight and a
different perspective on what actually happens in a kasi. Due to all the negative posts about the so called
dangerous kasi life, the masses stay away from such areas, this is so
unfortunate, as areas such Soweto, Tembisa etc have so much to offer https://mg.co.za/article/2013-10-18-00-if-its-survival-of-the-fittest-soweto-will-give-you-a-run-for-your-money.
I believe that
we can turn the stigma around, this in not just a challenge for public
relations practitioners, it goes out the PR students, the young, the old, the
brave, it’s for everyone. Get out there! Explore the townships, but don’t
explore it by yourself, there is a group of friends, they go by the name of
“Social Media”, namely twitter, facebook, Instagram and blogs. Let them tag along
and experience the kasi with you, use the hashtags #KasiLife, #KasiLifeIsInteresting,
this is how your new friends communicate and spread the word to people across
the globe, the is a fun way to get people to interact and change their
perspective about life in the townships. This article https://www.dailysun.co.za/News/National/Mlungu-girl-dumps-suburban-bliss-for-kasi-life-20150901 of a white girl who tried out the kasi
life is so inspirational, she got so drawn to the township that she ended up
moving there, not just for the fun but to make a difference and uplift the
township.
She realized that there’s a lot of talent
hidden between the walls of these small houses, so many dreams roaming the
streets, and so many possibilities chilling on corners.
Here’s the
challenge, be daring, be bold, be like this mlungu go out there, experience the
township and make things happen.
